In Turkey, “highway traffic accidents” is a huge problem. Crossing intercity roads by urban areas enlarges the dimension of the problem. The Black Sea Coastal Highway (BSCH), as an intercity road, also shows properties of an urban road due to existence of many settlements along it: in this road, there exist dense urban traffic and dense pedestrian traffic together with intercity traffic. Since speed is high in this multi‐functional road, the number and severity of accidents are also too much. In this study, drawbacks of superposing the intercity traffic, urban traffic and pedestrian traffic were emphasized. The current situation in BSCH was given as an example. It was found that traffic safety in the Giresun, Trabzon and Rize provinces is low with respect to Turkey averages, for the years... handled (2002‐2007). Furthermore, it was found that pedestrian safety in selected sections of the BSCH is also low with respect to Turkey averages, for the years handled. Some suggestions were made for the solution of the problem.
